Starting Tuesday, July 21, runners can apply for a spot in one of the world’s most prestigious races – the Generali Prague Half Marathon. Renowned among runners for its stunning course through the historic heart of Prague, its rich tradition and an absolutely electric atmosphere, the race also proudly holds the World Athletics Elite Label, is part of the elite SuperHalfs European half marathon series and stands as the most highly anticipated event in the RunCzech Halfs project. Unsurprisingly, demand for entries has been skyrocketing year after year.
The 26th edition, held at the end of this March, capped its capacity at 17,000 participants. However, immediately after registration opened, over 100,000 applicants tried to submit their applications. Consequently, for the registration of the 27th edition – scheduled to take place on April 3, 2027 – the organizers have decided to transition from the current ‘first-come, first-served’ model to a more equitable ballot system. “Our previous registration system was based on speed – spots went to those who filled out the form the fastest once registration opened. However, with skyrocketing demand, the race sold out within hours, meaning success came down to seconds, internet connection speed, or simply being online at the exact right moment. This put many runners at a disadvantage and the new system addresses this very effectively,” explains Carlo Capalbo, President of the RunCzech Organizing Committee.
This is nothing new in the running world. The ballot is a tried-and-tested format that successfully runs not only across all other SuperHalfs half marathons, but also at the world’s largest marathons in the Abbott World Marathon Majors series, including London, New York, Berlin, Chicago and Tokyo. Adopting this new system is not just a reaction to overwhelming demand – it is a direct step into a modern global trend that ensures fair conditions and less stress during the registration process for everyone involved.
How to Enter the Ballot
- Runners no longer need to wait for the exact moment registration opens. The application window for the ballot will now be open for three weeks and the submission time will have absolutely no impact on your chances of being selected.
- Once the application window closes, the organizer will conduct a random drawing of participants.
- Within 10 days of the application deadline, all selected runners will receive a unique registration code and payment instructions via email. Payment must be completed within 7 calendar days – after that, the registration offer expires with no exceptions.
What if I Want to Run with a Friend?
Every ballot application includes the option to nominate one running partner. If one of you is drawn, both of you automatically win the chance to purchase a starting spot. This option applies strictly to pairs, and each registration is non-transferable – meaning you cannot purchase a spot for someone else.
A Second Chance for Those Not Drawn
The organizers haven’t forgotten about the runners who don’t get lucky in the draw. Everyone who is not selected will receive an email with their results along with other ways to get involved in the race (for example, through charity partners). If they aren’t lucky this time, they can enter the ballot again next year, or register for other RunCzech half marathons and races, including the popular Naples event.
