While the women’s champion of the Ústí Half Marathon – local star Tereza Hrochová – pushed through a blistering pace from roughly the seventh kilometer, battling both the wind and the grueling solitude of running alone, the men’s lead pack eschewed a fast time for a tactical waiting game. They bided their time until German runner Simon Boch seized his moment, turning his RunCzech debut and first-ever race on Czech soil into an impressive victory.
Despite arriving in Ústí nad Labem with a personal best of 1:01:15 set in Hamburg in 2024, Boch secured the win in a measured 1:06:33. “The race was purely tactical right from the start. We stayed in a fairly large group for a long time because nobody wanted to burn energy too early. That suited me just fine. I focused on staying calm, maintaining a good position, and conserving strength. I felt good throughout, so I knew I’d have a shot at making a move late in the race,” he recalled of the early stages.
As the fastest runner on paper, Boch was the clear threat everyone should have been watching. With about a kilometer and a half to go, the German launched a blistering surge fueled by his stored-up reserves. “He hit that last kilometer at an insane pace – I think he caught everyone off guard. Nobody was ready for it,” admitted local contender Damián Vích, the only runner who managed to react in time, ultimately finishing second just five seconds back.
While it might have looked like a calculated move, Boch insisted it was anything but. “I didn’t go into the race with a set strategy, I just wanted to see how things unfolded. Coming into the final kilometers, I realized I still had plenty left in the tank. With less than two kilometers to go, I just felt the moment was right. After that, it was simply a matter of putting my head down, giving it everything, and not looking back.”
The four-time German champion spoke warmly of his introduction to the RunCzech circuit. “This was my first time racing in the Czech Republic, and I felt so welcome. The organization was top-notch, and everyone was genuinely friendly and supportive. I really liked the course, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Overall, it was a great first experience, and taking the win is obviously a huge confidence booster. The field was strong, so it’s great validation that my training is paying off and I’m heading in the right direction.”
His sights are now set on a December marathon in Spain. “My next big focus is the 2026 Valencia Marathon, and the Ústí half marathon fit perfectly into my current build-up. Being able to shift gears and finish that strongly gives me a lot of confidence heading into the coming weeks of training,” Boch said, leaving the door open for a return in 2027: “I’m taking home great memories, and I’d definitely love to come back to the Czech Republic. We’ll see whether that’s for individual races or a full shot at the EuroHeroes series.”
