Trip tips

Maschio Angioino

Also called Castel Nuovo, the fortress featured on the Napoli City Half Marathon medal in 2019. Here you will find five towers, a Renaissance triumphal arch, a civic art museum and a chapel.

Galleria Umberto I

Galleria Umberto I, the most famous shopping gallery in Naples, was built between 1887 and 1890 (just like the Eiffel Tower in Paris). You can enjoy modern architecture in Via San Carlo.

Piazza del Plebiscito

Piazza del Plebiscito is the symbol of Naples. The city's most important events take place here, including the Napoli City Half Marathon. The square is lined with architectural gems, including a neoclassical colonnade. You can try a traditional game between tourists and locals: Cross the square (170 meters) with your eyes closed.

Castel dell'Ovo

The medieval castle is located on the rocky islet of Megaride, on the coast near the center. The castle is connected to the mainland by a causeway, where wedding photos are often taken. One of the legends attributes the castle's name to an egg that Virgil supposedly hid in a cage in the castle's basement. The egg was guarded by heavy locks, because the wealth of the castle depended on it.

Via Pignasecca and the Spanish District

Pignasecca is a typical street of the Spanish Quarter. You can smell the market here. Come here to shop or at least watch the shouting fish sellers.

Spaccanapoli

The heart of Naples is the street Spaccanapoli. It crosses the historic center of the city and marks a direct line from the Spanish Quarter to "Forcella". Looking from above, you will see the combination of colors that characterizes it and thanks to which we can call Naples the most colorful city in Europe.

MM Toledo

The latest piece of art to be found in Naples. This is the Toledo metro station on Line 1. It was created by the Catalan architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca in 2012. The local newspaper described it as "the most beautiful station in Europe".

San Gennaro Cathedral

The Cathedral of Naples is the main church in the city. Under the high altar, the bones of San Gennaro are still preserved today, together with the famous ampoules that contain the holy blood. The liquefaction ceremony, which includes the so-called "Miracle of San Gennaro", during which the archbishop of Naples shows the faithful that the congealed blood contained in the ampoules has "miraculously" returned to a liquid state, is celebrated three times a year (on the Saturday before the first Sunday in May, September 19 - San Gennaro, and December 16).

San Gregorio Armeno

Here you will find countless craft shops dedicated to the art of "nativity scenes". The neighborhood and its small shops, where you can watch the artisans at work and their creations, can be visited all year round. The main characteristic of Neapolitan nativity scenes is that they are a perfect connection between the sacred and the profane, as they feature not only classical sculptures of the Holy Family in various dimensions, shapes and forms, but also caricature representations of famous people.

Vesuvius

The main symbol of Naples, historically known for the eruption that in 79 AD destroyed the city of Pompeii. Among the many legends related to it, one of the Vesuvius witches is linked to the eruption of 1958, after which the inhabitants of the vicinity of Vesuvius began to hear strange female noises every night without being able to understand where they came from.

The Real „Bar del Professore“

This historic place, an absolute must for all lovers of authentic Neapolitan espresso, is located in Piazza Trieste & Trento, just a few metres from the famous Piazza del Plebiscito. A place born in 1996 with more than 40 years of experience in the business passed down from father to son, it offers 63 other coffee variants in addition to the classic and creamy "Espresso del Professore". Particularly appreciated is the hazelnut coffee, a truly original creation born from the ingenuity of the famous owner Raffaele Ferrieri and his children, such as the "Caffè del Nonno", "Kinder Coffee" or "Caffè Cialdino".
