Hussein, Moila, Meye, Noakes and Posso: Why Africa is the home of distance runners

The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) s delighted to announce the speakers at the 20th World Congress of AIMS on the theme of “Africa: The Home of Distance Runners"

This years World Congress taking place in Durban, South Africa, from May 28 – 31 2014.

Contributors will include great African runners: three-time winner of the Boston Marathon Ibrahim Hussein; Blanche Moila, the first black woman to be awarded Springbok Colours and former South African Sportswoman of the Year and Olympic medallist and world champion Elana Meyer. The former runners will be joined by renowned exercise physiologist Professor Tim Noakes and keynote speaker Luis Felipe Posso, who is well known in the athletics world and for having represented some of the top talents in global sport including Josiah Thugwane, South Africa’s only male Olympic Marathon Champion (Atlanta 1996).

Posso will be speaking to Congress on the topic: “The Emergence, Impact and Dominance of African Runners on the World of Distance Racing.” Continuing on the theme “Africa: The Home of Distance Runners”, speakers Ibrahim Hussein, Blanche Moila and Elana Meyer, former elite runners who are now involved with the sport in other senior capacities, will talk at the Congress regarding their personal experiences and perspectives. Professor Tim Noakes will be presenting on “Historical Reasons Why African Runners are Successful”.

Other topics covered at the Congress will include “Contingency and Risk Management” and “Innovations and Technology”. These sessions will be addressed by expert race directors and specialist race service providers.

The 20th World Congress of AIMS is being held in the city of Durban, South Africa between the May 28 – 31 at the Southern Sun Elangeni and Maharani Hotel. The Congress will also give race organisers the chance to promote their races to over 36,000 international runners and visitors at the Comrades Marathon Expo. The weekend finishes with the Comrades Marathon on June 1, which begins in the nearby city of Pietermaritzburg and finishes at the Sahara-Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban.
